Did district wait too long to address salaries?

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

The Mehlville School District is requesting a tax increase to raise teacher salaries.

My question is, how much money did the district receive in PPE funds? How was it spent?

I am all for an increase in salary for our teachers, who I believe have a thankless job; however, this district just received a tax increase for building updates, no mention of teachers salaries.

To be honest, I don’t trust the politics involved.

I have lived in the district since 1959. My children and grandchildren graduated from these schools. Yes, I did vote for the last tax increase; but, I have a question regarding priority. Could it be that teachers and others’ salaries were not considered until the district was in jeopardy of losing their best and brightest?

Editor’s note: The last tax rate increase in Mehlville was Proposition R in 2015. The last ballot measure in 2021, Proposition S, was a no tax-rate-increase bond specifically to address facility needs.
