May is off to a strong start with films both premiering in theaters and on streaming services, as well as looking ahead at what is to come. Let’s take a look to see what is worth a watch and what you may want to miss!
Now Playing in Theaters
“The Sheep Detectives” — An exceptionally charming film that is fun for the whole family, recommended for ages 8+ although our 5 and 6 year old sons still had a blast! It contains elements of both “Paddington” and “Knives Out” giving it plenty of laughs, mystery and misdirection. Hugh Jackman, along with a stellar voice cast, create charming and endearing characters as the whodunnit unfolds. You can’t imagine just how emotional you can get over a sheep! This is definitely one to watch at 4/5 stars.
“Obsession” — A frightening, sinister and intense film that will make you think twice before you make a wish again. While ambitious, it rises to the occasion with nonstop tension and a relentlessness that delivers. Curry Barker probes he is a master in shock and suspense. While the entire cast is excellent, Indeed Navarette is unforgettable in this stand-out role. This is a must see for any horror lovers at 4.5/5 stars.
“Is God Is” — Another wildly ambitious, violent film out this month is a revenge story oozing with style and originality. Kara Young and Mallory Johnson share palpable, authentic chemistry alongside a devious Sterling K. Brown. While this is a unique role for Brown, his performance is exquisite and will leave you hanging on his every word. This was an impressive directorial debut for Aleshea Harris. While this is one that audiences may want to miss, if you are a Sterling K. Brown fan I would say it could be worth the watch at 3.5/5stars.
“I Love Boosters” — A surrealistic and bold film that is bursting with creativity. This film refuses to be categorized — it explores multiple complex themes and ideals while still maintaining plenty of humor. Keke Palmer anchors an insane cast of talented actors, but it is her undeniable intensity and charm that will captivate. 4/5 stars.
Now Streaming on Netflix
“Remarkably Bright Creatures” — A captivating and beautiful story of grief and healing. Led by the incomparable Sally Field with Lewis Pullman, Colm Meany and impressive voice work from Alfred Molina; it is a moving film with a powerful message. This one is packed with raw, palpable emotion that successfully drives its message home. Another great one to watch at 4/5 stars!
“Marty, Life Is Short” — The great Martin Short shines in this Netflix feature, which bares all and shows that his success was anything but overnight. He had to overcome mountains of tragedy, failure and self-doubt. With the help of a tight group of friends including Eugene Levy, Steve Martin, Catherine O’Hara, Andrea Martin and, of course, his lovely wife, Nancy Dolman, this is an easy at-home watch for all. 4/5 stars.
