• Get crafty | Bring in your crochet, knit, crewel, cross-stitch, needlepoint, embroidery or other project to learn and enjoy the company of others at the Grant’s View Branch of the St. Louis County Library, 9700 Musick Ave. This event will take place from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
• Learn about history | Join Park Ranger Jonas in learning about one of the unique chapters of Civil War history: the use of hot-air and hydrogen balloons by the Union Army for military surveillance. This program will take place from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, 7400 Grant Road. Learn about Thaddeus Lowe, the eccentric scientist and architect behind the Union Army Balloon Corps and how military ballooning — while promising — eventually was deemed to be too much “hot” air for the Union’s war effort. • Learn to babysit | Get ready to become a safe and successful babysitter with the Safe Sitter program at the Cliff Cave Branch of the St. Louis County Library, 5430 Telegraph Road. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Teens ages 12-16 will build childcare, first aid and CPR skills while also learning key business skills to help them stand out and earn babysitting jobs with confidence. Participants will go home with a certificate of completion and a Safe Sitter Student Handbook. Course sizes are limited and participants may be chosen by lottery. Sunday, Aug. 30

• Join in worship | Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 3600 Hampton Ave., has worship recorded and streamed every Sunday from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. on Facebook and YouTube and in person.
• Make a difference | The River Rock Church of Lemay will host its Better Rest program for families in the Lemay community who have children in need of a bed. Volunteers are wanted. Volunteers will go to homes to meet families and measure the bedrooms to make sure the bunk beds will fit. The church also needs volunteers to go into homes, build the bunk beds and gift bedding and Bibles. Conducted by Saint Louis Vets Connect, “Veterans Coffee Talk” was created so veterans can enjoy the brotherhood shared by all branches of service, providing a non-political atmosphere where their stories and valor can be shared.
