Pool open to dogs | The Sunset Hills Dog Splash will take place from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Sunset Hills Aquatic Facility, 12512 W. Watson Road. The cost of admission is $15 per dog with half of all proceeds going to Gateway Pet Guardians. Proof of Rabies and Bordetella vaccinations are required at time of registration. All dogs must be spayed or neutered. You can pre-register online, at the Sunset Hills Community Center or pay at the door.
Pokémon Fan Fest | The 2nd Annual Pokémon Fan Fest will take place from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Grant’s View Branch of the St. Louis County Library, 9700 Musick Ave. Come for a celebration of all things Pokémon, including crafts, games, activities, live music, Kona Ice and Gateway LEGO Builders. Dress as your favorite Pokémon, trainer or character. Bring your cards for open play with Game Nite.

Dive into history | The unassuming Ulysses S. Grant never expected to play a significant role in the Civil War, yet by its end he commanded every soldier in the United States armed forces. Dr. Curt Fields will discuss his latest book, “Unconditional Surrender: Ulysses S. Grant in the Civil War.” Drawing on years of extensive research, Dr. Fields offers an ideal introduction to the “dust-covered man” from the Midwest who won the Civil War and preserved the United States. This lecture will take place from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, 7400 Grant Road. The program is free. Call 314-842-1867 ext. 230 for reservations.
Beautify your community | Join communities across the country to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and pay tribute to the first responders and service members who answered the call in the days that followed. In partnership with the National Cemetery Administration, the National Day of Service and Remembrance brings volunteers together at more than 140 participating national, grant-funded and local cemeteries across the country. Volunteers will help clean headstones and beautify these sacred grounds in tribute to our military members, veterans, first responders and their families. This cleaning event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2900 Sheridan Road. Registration is free, but required; sign up at carrytheload.org.

Dive into history | This outdoor living history event will take you back to the time following the Grants’ White House years and World Tour, as they visited White Haven for what would be the last time in 1883. Guests will be guided to different parts of the White Haven grounds to hear stories from several of the people who were most important in Julia Dent Grant’s life. This event will take place from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, 7400 Grant Road. The event is free, but reserved chairs are limited to the first 90 people who register. Sunday, Sept. 13

Make a difference | The River Rock Church of Lemay will host its Better Rest program for families in the Lemay community who have children in need of a bed. Volunteers are wanted. Volunteers will go to homes to meet families and measure the bedrooms to make sure the bunk beds will fit. The church also needs volunteers to go into homes, build the bunk beds and gift bedding and Bibles. Donate new twin-size bedding, pillows, sheets, comforters and blankets at River Rock Church, 1601 Telegraph Road, from 9 a.m. to noon. Call the church office at 314-968-0600 if you have questions.

Test your history knowledge | How well do you know the United States Constitution? Test your knowledge with a self-led Jeopardy-style pop-up program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, 7400 Grant Road. In the park visitor center, visitors will be able to choose their category, view the clue, and guess the correct answer. Test your knowledge and perhaps make a few new friends as you play against opposing visitor teams. The program is free. No reservations are required.
Recycle old electronics | The Sunset Hills Parks and Recreation Department and Adonis have teamed up to offer you the opportunity to recycle those unwanted or broken down electronics you have cluttering up your house. All items should be brought to the recycling truck at Watson Trail Park, 12450 W. Watson Road, by the tennis courts, from noon to 5 p.m.. Dive into history | The Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, 7400 Grant Road, will conclude its year-long celebration of Julia Dent Grant honoring the 200th anniversary of her birth. This is one last chance to see the special exhibit on Julia with about 30 artifacts from her life. The park will remain open until 6 p.m. and feature live music by Jim Nelson and the old-time string band, Old Jawbone. This free event is being held in conjunction with a dinner that evening, commemorating Julia, hosted by Grant’s Farm. For information about the dinner, click here.
Learn about nature | The City of Sunset Hills will host “Fall Speaker Series: Black Bears in Missouri” with Dan Zarlenga from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at the Sunset Hills Community Center, 3915 S. Lindbergh Blvd. Zarlenga is originally from the St. Louis area but began his career with the Department of Conservation in 1996 at its central headquarters in Jefferson City. He served as the audio production specialist and worked with the video crew. In 2008 he was promoted to St. Louis regional media specialist and moved back to his hometown.
