A resolution honoring the Friends of Jefferson Barracks — a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the historic sites within Jefferson Barracks Park — was unanimously approved by the St. Louis County Council at its June 2 meeting.
The resolution, introduced by Sixth District County Councilman Mike Archer (R-Oakville), touched on the organization’s longstanding commitment, now over 43 years, to maintaining the site, as well as the $1 million raised in donations and grants to do so. It was also mentioned that Jefferson Barracks is celebrating an exciting milestone in 2026: the 200th anniversary of its founding.
“This group of people have made it their mission to honor the past and educate our community about the history of Jefferson Barracks,” Guinn Hinman, the historic and cultural sites manager for St. Louis County Parks, said. “Their outstanding contributions include raising funds and receiving grants for the second floor edition of the visitor center, building the Stockton family picnic shelter, installing 10 interpretive panels around the park, replacing the slate roof on two historic museum buildings, restoring the rifle barrel fence and cannons and dozens of other projects — too many to mention today. Their contributions to the community, the park and the site are immeasurable.”
