As part of the VFW Day of Service, members of VFW Post 1831 spent May 15 outside the Spinal Cord Unit at Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center, cooking and serving lunch to veterans.
“This is our day of service. I’ve been doing this for 15 years. Our post has been doing it longer,” Quincy Myrick, Missouri’s VFW Commander, said. “‘For veterans, by veterans’ — that’s our motto this year. This is what we do. We serve veterans. All of these veterans that we’re serving here have disabilities. This is to thank them for their service and to be here for them and with them. Let’s honor them.”
“It’s a really good time. It’s nice,” Tina Hahler, VFW Post 1831 president-elect, said. “We cook them their food, and they just come out and enjoy it. It’s a wonderful day.”
Though lunch was a main draw, the event also included various activities. A $3,087 check from VFW Post 1831 to the spinal cord unit was also presented; the post was able to make the donation through proceeds from its annual car show held in September.
A worldwide initiative that mobilizes veterans, service members and community partners to improve their neighborhoods, the VFW Day of Service was launched by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2022. Continuing through the month of May, this year’s VFW Day of Service began on May 2. Over 2,400 veteran-led service projects in 13 countries across three continents, including this one, took place.
