The Oakville girls cross country team is off to a good start this year, said head coach Kelsey Tunze, and hopes to build on its experiences from 2021.

After experiencing some success in 2021, the Oakville girls cross country team is hoping to build on those experiences for the 2022 campaign.

“We are definitely off to a good start with 40 people coming out this year,” Oakville head coach Kelsey Tunze said. “There were a handful of girls that got together over the summer and got their mileage in. Between that and a good group of seniors this year,  it’s going to be an exciting year.”

Seniors Emily Keck and Sydney Lodage will serve as the Tiger’s team captains for the 2022 season.

“Emily definitely has the biggest drive and is the positive attitude on the team,” Tunze said. “Sydney is a well-rounded athlete and is one of the fastest on the team. She’s such a super supporter and a positive influence to have on the team.”

One runner to keep an eye on this season is junior Maria Parisi, who qualified for the Missouri Class 5 state championships and placed 70th out of 164 runners.

“Maria was our lone state qualifier last year as a sophomore,” Tunze said. “We’re hoping that she improves on those results this season.”

Another senior that is making an impact on this year’s team is Magena Baker.

“Magena is very welcoming to all the new runners on the team,” Tunze said. “She’s always the first to learn everyone’s name and run with them during practice.”

Juniors Syndey Baker, Lucy Caira and Samantha Wetteroff round out the Tiger’s top runners returning for the 2022 season.

“They were all a part of our top seven last year,” Tunze said. “They had some really good races that I think that they were really proud of.”

The Tigers begin the 2022 season Aug. 30 at the Fleet Feet Classic at the Arnold City Park.
