With a full roster that includes 14 freshmen, the Lindbergh boys cross country team is ready to jump into the 2021 season.
“Right now, we’re trying to figure out exactly who’s going to be in our top seven this year,” Lindbergh head coach Jim Petersen said. “We’ve got good numbers and ability with our freshmen. Actually we have 14 freshmen this year, so I think we’ll have a pretty solid freshman team.”
One runner that has established himself as the leader on this year’s team is senior David Fletcher.
“David has trained hard over the winter and had a really good track season,” Petersen said. “He’s really put in the miles this Summer and is heads above everyone else right now.”
Another senior that the Flyers head coach has high hopes for is Elijah Myers.
“Elijah is very consistent in that he finishes just as strong as he starts,” Petersen said. “He, like everyone else, needs to get into racing shape right now.”
Senior Colin Jamison is slated to move up from the junior varsity team to varsity squad this season.
“Colin’s been a solid junior varsity runner for us the last couple of years,” Petersen said. “He’s got the speed, but now we just need to work on his endurance.”
The Flyers head coach is also looking for big things to come from junior Nathan Liebitrue during the 2021 campaign.
“Nathan had a big summer,” Petersen said. “He was our eighth guy last year but he had improved a lot during the track season.”
Sophomore Alvin Wibel returns to the varsity squad this season and has the potential to take the No. 2 position in the starting lineup.
“Alvin was our seventh or eighth guy as a freshman and he’s also had a good summer,” Petersen said. “He’s got good athletic ability and really has the potential to be our No. 2 guy this year.”
The Flyers open up the 2021 season on the road at Jackson Aug. 28.
