Dive into history | William Tecumseh Sherman served as a general in the Union Army under Ulysses S. Grant early in the Civil War. A brilliant military strategist, Sherman took command in the western theater when Grant was called east by Lincoln. Sherman led his army through the south on what came to be known as his famous “March to the Sea.” Sherman’s original autobiography in 1875 chronicled his wartime experiences, including his perspectives on major battles and tactics, but the new complete annotated edition of his memoirs provides fresh insights into his military career, leadership and candid opinions on contemporaries, making his significant work more accessible and understandable for today’s readers. Authors John Marszelak and David Nolen will discuss their latest work in this presentation, which will take place from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, 7400 Grant Road. Celebrate local history | Celebrate the 50th birthday of the Kennedy Recreation Complex. For $5, you can paint a cinder block on the wall in the complex’s warming room and leave your mark. Tours of the facility, including some special spots that aren’t usually open to the public, will be offered, along with crafts and games. The celebration runs from noon to 4 p.m., and the concession stand will be open all afternoon. Dive into history | The Missouri Civil War Museum presents “The Sultana Disaster” by historian and retired educator Barbara Kay. Learn more about the worst maritime disaster in American history, the Sultana Disaster of 1865. This event is free for Missouri Civil War Museum Members and $10 for the general public. Concert for a cause | Welcome spring with the country rock sounds of Greensboro, taking place at Historic Sappington Park, 1015 S. Sappington Road. Help those in need | The River Rock Church of Lemay will host its Better Rest program for families in the Lemay community who have children in need of a bed. Volunteers are wanted. Volunteers will go to homes to meet families and measure the bedrooms to make sure the bunk beds will fit. The church also needs volunteers to go into homes, build the bunk beds and gift bedding and Bibles. Donate new twin-size bedding, pillows, sheets, comforters and blankets at River Rock Church, 1601 Telegraph Road, from 9 a.m. to noon. Call the church office at 314-968-0600 if you have questions.
