Whitecliff Park’s playground may be getting a refresh. Crestwood residents were recently invited to weigh in via survey on 16 potential design options. The survey has since closed, and now the top three designs will move on to a final vote. Residents will be able to vote on the top three designs in person at the June 16 meeting of the Park Board; there will also be an online survey and in-person voting at the Crestwood Community Center, 9245 Whitecliff Park Lane, on June 17 and 18.
The City of Crestwood currently plans to apply for grant funding through the St. Louis Municipal Parks Grant. If awarded, construction of the new playground is expected to begin in fall 2027.
The Crestwood Board of Aldermen will vote on whether the city can apply for grant funding at its July meeting — at the same meeting, the final results of the survey will be presented before the board.
“After 22 years of providing enjoyment at Whitecliff Park, it is time for an upgrade,” Crestwood Director of Parks and Recreation Eilien Ramirez said. “This is an opportunity to introduce a new, more inclusive playground that can cater to children of all abilities. This marks another exciting moment for Crestwood Parks and Recreation.”
The options are wide-ranging in both design theme and elements — some of the proposed playground designs are fish and ocean themed, while others have a woodlands aesthetic. There’s a fair share of classic slides, swings and ladders in every design, but some incorporate unique elements like enclosed rope bridges or play sculptures that children can clamber across.
On the City of Crestwood’s Facebook page, local commenters publicly shared their opinions on the 16 designs.
“All-inclusive, plenty of shade and seating for parents,” one resident suggested in the comment section. “Possibly fenced in or at least partially fenced. Working in special education, I know a lot of parents who would be able to breathe easier if everything was enclosed to add another layer of safety for the kids.”
“Seeing all of these options with sunshades is amazing!” one commenter said. Others urged the city to consider designs that would make the playground handicap accessible.
