To the editor:
Please vote NO on Proposition 2, which the city of Crestwood has termed “Efficiencies.” This proposition changes charter language which could lead to serious, negative long-term consequences. Here’s how:
Proposition 2 removes language which requires the Board of Alderman to allow public comments at meetings. It also removes language regarding the time and place of meetings, allowing meetings at any time of day and even outside city limits. That means that a simple majority vote could significantly change our access to Board of Alderman meetings.
Proposition 2 adds language to allow the same independent auditor to conduct the audit for more than five years when approved by 3/4 of the board, meaning the same auditor could serve Crestwood for a very long time. Remember Enron? A five-year auditor rotation maintains objectivity, impartiality, professional skepticism and provides a fresh perspective on financials and internal controls. It prevents auditor biases that develop over time, reduces the incentive to gain favor with management to retain the firm and lessens the pressure to support client decisions because of impending rotation. Rotating auditors is vital to maintaining auditor independence and the public trust.
