Voters line up outside Cliff Cave Library in Oakville Tuesday, Aug. 5, to vote in the primary election.

Voters who didn’t vote early or by mail were waiting in lines hundreds of people deep throughout South County as Election Day kicked off. By 4 p.m., the St. Louis County Board of Elections said that turnout hit 72 percent, including absentee and mail-in ballots. Polls close at 7 p.m., but you can vote as long as you’re in line at closing time.

The lines at most major South County polling places hovered between 100 and 200 voters waiting around 8:30 a.m. and have ebbed and flowed throughout the day. But even at voting sites with longer lines, most voters reported that the line moved quickly. Temperatures reached the mid-70s at midday, allowing voters to comfortably wait outside and keep 6 feet apart for social distancing.

Polls opened at 6 a.m. and stay open through 7 p.m., although anyone standing in line when polls close will be able to vote.

New this year, registered voters can vote at any polling place in St. Louis County. And new this election, voters can check the election board’s website for waiting times at polling places.

While you’re waiting, check out the St. Louis Call’s South County Election Guide 2020, with articles and endorsements on all the candidates and issues you need to know.
