Supreme Court should go step further, declare ‘right to life’

To the editor:

The Supreme Court decision in Dobbs has overturned Roe and Casey. I personally believe they should have gone further, declaring the right to life.

The biological definition of life includes response to stimuli, growth, metabolism and reproduction. These conditions are all met at conception. This means that we know abortion kills a living human child.

The Declaration of Independence says that life is an inalienable right.

The 5th and 14th Amendments provide protections for life.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child Article 6 states, “that every child has the inherent right to life,” and that we must, “ensure to the maximum extent possible the survival and development of the child.”

The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 3 states, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.” The Preamble notes that this, “extends to all members of the human family,” of which the conceived child is the first genetic member. Article 6 notes that, “Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.”

Human life should always be protected under law. I am glad more lives will be protected, but there are still more threatened.
