A 79-year-old man riding a scooter died Saturday night after he was hit by a minivan at the intersection of Telegraph and Barracksview roads.

Police identified the man Tuesday as Alan Landis, 79, of the 300 block of Kingston Drive in Lemay, 63125.

Police are still investigating the two-car crash, which happened around 8 p.m. Saturday, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Police Department said. The drivers of the Ford Windstar minivan and the 49cc motorized scooter had no passengers and were the only people involved in the crash.

The van driver was headed south on Telegraph Road and preparing to turn into the shopping plaza around Petco on the eastern side of the 3100 block of Telegraph Road, which connects to Walmart, when the van hit the scooter in the intersection.

Scooter driver Landis was taken to a local hospital for life-saving treatment, but was pronounced dead hours later.

The Ford Windstar driver, a man in his early 40s, did not report any injuries, police said. He remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The crash Saturday was not the first time that a person riding a motorized bike was struck and killed by a van at the Telegraph and Barracksview intersection.

Two years ago, Patriot Guard Rider Mark Schroeder was riding a motorcycle bringing up the rear of a funeral procession to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery when he was struck and killed as he was riding through that intersection by a minivan driver who was also turning into the shopping plaza around Walmart.
