Occasionally, passersby may find the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery dotted with people, weaving between the headstones with buckets of water, Dawn soap and brushes. Approximately 1,000 volunteers showed up to the cemetery on Sept. 12 to participate in “Carry the Load,” where they cleaned headstones in honor of the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
Carry the Load is a national nonprofit that honors military veterans, first responders and their families. The nonprofit held similar events across the country on Sept. 12 in remembrance.
