The Lindbergh High School girls’ basketball team recently grabbed a confidence-building win with a 50-49 victory at home over Cor Jesu Academy.

“Personally, I think that this was a game that could turn our confidence around early in the season,” Lindbergh head coach Bill Thoele said of the Dec. 11 victory. “It was a very competitive and close game. I think that this was a huge win not only for our record, but a huge confidence builder.”

The Flyers (4-3, 1-0) were led by Brittany Casey with a 19-point scoring effort. The junior forward also pounded out 12 rebounds as well as two assists and one steal against the Chargers.

“Brittany’s been struggling a bit offensively and was having problems with her shot,” Thoele said. “Just for her confidence alone, this was a big game and I think that this game will get her going.”

Another Flyer who scored 19 points was senior guard Aimee Ubriaco, who also had five steals, five assists and four rebounds.

“We go only as far as Aimee takes us,” Thoele said. “We’re relying on her to score a bit more this season and she’s done a great job for us.”

Sophomore guard Alicia Ubriaco also scored in double figures with 10 points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist.

“Alicia had also been struggling with her outside shot,” Thoele said. “She had a couple of big shots late in the game to get things going for us.”

The Flyers were scheduled to be back in action at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday — after the Call went to press — against Hillsboro in the Seckman Holiday Tournament.

Hillsboro (1-5) has struggled early on in the season and the Hawks dropped a 54-34 decision to Seckman Dec. 13.

“I think that we match up well with them,” Thoele said. “If we do the things we’re capable of doing, we should advance to the next round.”
