Tiger girls struggle; fall to Cor Jesu 2-0

No one can accuse the girls’ soccer team at Oakville Senior High School of having a soft schedule.

The Tigers (0-1) opened up the 2005 season last week at Cor Jesu, coming away with a disappointing 2-0 loss. Cor Jesu de-feated Oakville 2-1 last season and won the District 3 championship in 2003.

Despite the loss to the Chargers, Oakville head coach Dave Robben was upbeat about his team’s play in the first half of action.

“The first half was pretty much an even, back-and-forth half,” Robben told the Call. “Our passing was good and overall, we felt pretty good at halftime.”

But the first five minutes of play in the second half hurt the Tigers as Cor Jesu got two goals from Caitlin Werkmeister.

“The wheels kind of fell off in the second half,” Robben explained. “The wind pick-ed up in the second half, and we had a hard time getting the ball out of our end.”

The Tigers are back in action at 6 p.m. Thursday, playing host to Parkway South in a Suburban West Conference match.

Oakville defeated the Patriots 2-0 last season.

The Tigers’ head coach said this should be a good opportunity for his team to refocus and notch their first win of the season against a good team.

“What I anticipate is that with Al Trost as their head coach, they’ll be a very well coached team,” Robben said.

“With Spring Break out of our way, we can hopefully become more focused on our efforts,” he said.
