This year’s Fill-the-Boot campaign for MDA most successful ever

To the editor:

A tip of the helmet to our community — Mehlville firefighters and paramedics wish to thank the residents of the Mehlville Fire Protection District for this year’s Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon Fill-the-Boot campaign contributions.

Through your generosity, we collected $35,400 over two weekends making it our most successful collection ever.

This year’s efforts were inspired in the memory of our fallen brother, firefighter Alex Scheuer, who lost his valiant battle with cancer this past Valentine’s Day.

He had served as our MDA chairman for many years and held the MDA cause close to his heart. In honor of Alex, we wore black baseball hats during the collection times on the area intersections reading: “This one’s for Alex — MDA.”

This collection allows us the honor of taking the donations from your car and delivering them to someone who will hopefully find a cure. We hope that this will be the year, if not, we will be there at the intersections next year and every year until there is a cure.

On a selfish note to someone who looks after us from above while we are on duty, sometimes in dangerous situations, we want to say: This one was for you, Alex.

P.S. to Call Publications:

I also wanted to say a special thank you for placing the photo of our firefighters and paramedics with their reflective vests on in the Call just prior to our Fill-the-Boot campaign.

I know that this photo made us much more recognizable and our residents showed that while sitting at the traffic lights donating with such generosity.

Your contribution to our efforts is appreciated.
