The Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen directed city staff Dec. 13 to draft an ordinance calling for an election April 4, 2023, to set a 3-percent local sales tax on recreational marijuana sales in the city.

On Nov. 3, Missouri voters approved a constitutional amendment, Amendment 3, legalizing recreational marijuana in the state. The amendment permits local governments to charge up to a 3-percent local sales tax on recreational marijuana. It is not possible to charge a higher local sales tax.

The 3-percent sales tax would be in addition to a 6-percent statewide sales tax.

Crestwood will also be holding an election on the 3-percent sales tax in April.

The Sunset Hills board will vote on the ordinance at its Jan. 10 meeting.
