State rep has already broken oath to voters

State rep has already broken oath to voters

To the editor:

Jim Avery, Republican representative of Crestwood in the Missouri House, has already broken his oath to the voters who elected him.

This past January he swore to “promote the general welfare…” and “to govern by the consent of…” the people. In a near treasonous act, he willfully disobeyed his constituents and voted in favor of HB 349, which south county voters overwhelmingly rejected as Proposition B, the concealed carry weapons referendum of 1999.

How dare you Mr. Avery? You are charged with representing all of the people from Crestwood, not just the gun slinging NRA members who put you in office. Is this the type of “Cowboy Politics” south county voters can expect from you? This isn’t the old west, you are not Wyatt Earp, and we don’t need people carrying guns into our schools and shopping malls.

Your swaggering, blatant disregard for the results of the Prop B 1999 referendum shows that you are more concerned with pandering lobbyists who hand out money and favors in Jefferson City than with the people who elected you. You should either recant on your vote on HB 349 and vote against concealed carry weapons, or you should resign from office since it is obvious that you have no intention of actually “representing” all the good people of Crestwood.

What kind of man are you that would allow hotshots to pack a piece to a public park, or a bank or a church? As a parent, I’m very disturbed with the idea of incautious adults who could legally carry a handgun to a sporting event; do you really want to see some guy with a revolver rebuking a referee or your kids coach over a bad call in a high school football game? Oh, I forgot Mr. Avery, you aren’t married, so you don’t have to think about kids do you?

You really screwed this up Avery, and I hope no one will ever have to say that their kid died as a result of a “yes” vote for concealed carry weapons. Oh, I know guns don’t kill people, but people who carry guns can sure do an efficient job of killing other people.
