Pundit questions ‘short-timer’ citizen’s assessment of Clown City days

Michael Broughton is at it again. This time he is unhappy that the Green Park newsletter is addressed to “resident” rather than to the citizen who lives at that address.

In his June 5 letter, he writes, “It’s but one of the many sad footnotes to the history of a community that could be a wonderful place to live, yet is known to its residents as Clown City.”

This is a phrase that he seems to love dearly. Mr. Broughton then goes on to say that he has been a resident of Green Park for an incredible six years.

Six years? How does such a short-timer know so much about our fair city? Some of us have been here since they scraped away all the topsoil and started putting up houses some 40 years ago — give or take a few years. We have seen some strange things happen around here. There were times when after we incorporated and elected a few really weird mayors, things got so bad we weren’t sure if we would keep going or the U.S. government would shut us down because we weren’t paying an amusement tax to live here. We were afraid we would have to erect a circus tent over the whole city.

Now those were Clown City days and believe me, things have changed for the better.

And “resident?” About half the mail I get is addressed “resident” and except for the newsletter, I throw them away.

The rest of them — the bills — have my name in big, bold letters. What’s so great about that?
