The man in a motorized wheelchair who was struck and killed while crossing a street in South County Monday night has been identified by police.

Police said Sevkija Ferhatovic, 64, of the 3600 block of Lemay Road, died at the hospital after being hit by a car.

Originally, police said that Ferhatovic died at the scene, but later corrected that information.

He was attempting to cross Lemay Ferry just south of Victory Drive around 6:15 p.m. Monday when he was hit by a car while in his wheelchair. The area where he was hit was close to where Ferhatovic lived.

Police said the man driving the 2010 Mazda 3 sedan that struck Ferhatovic, who is 32, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

South County Precinct officers responded to a 911 call to get to the scene.

The St. Louis County Police Department is asking anyone with information to call 636-529-8210 to speak to investigators.
