The word “impressive” comes to mind upon examining Cody Terry’s four years at Oakville Senior High School.
For starters, Terry was Oakville’s Scholar Athlete of the Year this past year after holding down a 3.9 grade-point average while starring on the football and baseball teams.
As the quarterback of the football team, Terry completed 65 passes for 994 yards, seven touchdowns and a 93.991 quarterback rating. The Tigers posted a 9-1 record overall, one of the school’s best in recent history. Terry finished his high school football career with Second-Team All-Suburban West Conference honors.
As shortstop for the Oakville baseball team, this First-Team All-Suburban West Conference selection he batted .321 with 15 runs batted in. He also had an impressive season with the Oakville Tigers Baseball Club, which recently finished the season with a 15-15 record.
“Cody’s been very, very good all year long,” Oakville Tigers head coach Nick Aboussie told the Call. “He’s a leader that’s batted in the No. 3 slot pretty much all year long. He goes out there and does what he needs to do on a daily basis.”
For the baseball club, Terry played at the catcher position after spending the past two seasons in high school at shortstop.
“I had moved from second base to shortstop during my junior year, but I’ve been actually catching a lot this season,” Terry said. “To tell you the truth, I just started catching this summer. I don’t care where I play. I just want to play.”
Terry also is involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He served as the Oakville chapter’s president and also was a member of the student board for the St. Louis metro area.
This coming fall, Terry will enroll at the University of Tennessee-Martin and aims to help the Skyhawks improve on last season’s 19-36 record in which only three of those wins came on the road.
“Coach (Bubba) Cates was one of the few coaches to ask me to play for them,” Terry said. “He saw me play in a July 4th tournament and it seems like it was one of those things that was meant to happen.”
Something baseball fans may not know is that Terry is the son of Scott Terry, who played five seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Scott Terry won 23 games for the Cardinals in 208 appearances on the mound.
Despite the pressure he may put on himself because his dad his a former major-leaguer, the younger Terry believes he has a huge advantage over other players.
“I’m at such a great advantage and obviously blessed to have my dad around,” he said. “I think that there is some pressure of my dad being a major-leaguer on occasion.
“But that’s not coming from him. If it’s there, then I’m putting it on myself.”
