A compilation of offense and stellar defense propelled the Oakville Senior High School varsity football team to a dominating 50-10 victory over the Northwest Lions Friday night.

With the win, the Tigers’ third in a row, the team improved to 5-3 on the season with just one regular-season game to play before the playoffs.

Oakville found the end zone seven times in the contest, capitalizing on a couple of interceptions and its own drives as well.

Tigers quarterback Andy Oliver completed 8 of 17 for 151 yards of offense and two touchdowns with one interception.

Tigers Head Coach Arlee Conners told the Call it was a well-rounded effort on both sides of the ball.

“… For the most part, I thought we did some good things offensively,” he said. “I thought we moved the ball on the ground, which we haven’t done.

“We moved the ball a little bit against Mehlville, but it took us a while … I thought we moved the ball pretty well on the ground. I thought we protected the quarterback a little bit better. Defensively, I thought we did a better job against the run, which was a big part of the win tonight.”

The Oakville offense racked up 288 yards rushing, a season high for the club.

While offense is what really revs up a crowd and fans love it, defense is equally important and it was a big part of the Tigers’ game plan for Northwest.

“We knew it was going to start from the defense because they (the Lions) wanted to run the ball constantly, just trying to gain yards and milk the clock. But our defense did a good job of getting them three and off the field,” Conners said. “I think it was an overall team effort. Mainly I would say our defense, overall, was probably the biggest thing that happened out there tonight.”

With the final regular season game on the horizon, the Tigers are in pretty good position to earn themselves a home game in week 10 — the first round of the playoffs — if they can beat SLUH Friday night on the road.

And while SLUH is having an uncharacteristic losing season with a 3-5 record, many fans know, however, that records mean nothing, especially when it comes to these two teams.

Conners said its a game that his players will be looking for a little revenge.

“We’ve got SLUH and that’s a matchup we look forward to,” he said. “We’ve lost to these guys pretty big the last two times we’ve played them, so we definitely look forward to to a better showing against these guys.

Besides dominating the Tigers in 2012, SLUH knocked the Tigers out of the playoffs in 2011.
