When the Oakville Senior High School girls’ soccer team planned a trip to Springfield in the middle of April, members didn’t think that snow would be in the forecast.

The Tigers (6-0-2, 2-0 Suburban West) were scheduled to take on Glendale Senior High of Springfield Friday with opponents yet to be determined for Saturday. But Mother Nature had other plans as Oakville’s game with Glendale was postponed to Saturday.

“The weather was the main issue there,” Oakville head coach Dave Robben told the Call. “We knew on Thursday evening that they had already canceled the Friday game due to weather and on Saturday morning, there was a huge storm with sleet and snow.”

But the weather couldn’t keep the Tigers from posting a 3-0 win over Glendale in Oakville’s lone game of the tournament.

“We knew from the info on the Internet that Glendale was coming off a win over Kickapoo, which is a big rivalry game,” Robben said. “Overall though, this was probably our best game so far this season.”

Oakville wasted no time in taking a 1-0 lead over Glendale as sophomore forward Samantha Schlake scored her second goal of the season at the 20-minute mark.

Junior forward Lauren Radman recorded the assist on Schlake’s goal, her first assist of the season.

“Samantha’s a sophomore that’s played a number of different positions this season,” Robben said. “She’s been able to step up and is very comfortable at playing striker. I thought that she finished the goal off with good composure.”

The Tigers increased their lead to 2-0 when Brooke Inman scored her second goal of the year at the 30-minute mark in the first half. Jasmina Suljic recorded the assist on Inman’s goal, her third assist of the 2007 campaign.

“Jasmina took the shot on goal, and Brooke ran onto it after the initial save,” Robben said. “Brooke was there to finish it off on the rebound.”

Inman notched her third goal of the year 15 minutes into the second half to give Oakville a commanding 3-0 lead. Senior midfielder Courtney Mask received the assist on Inman’s second goal, which happened to be her first of the season.

“Brooke had a good game,” Robben said. “She actually had a number of chances on goal in that game.”
