Spring has sprung in one Sunset Hills resident’s garden. Mary Halloran, who lives off West Watson Road in Sunset Hills, shows off her colorful garden full of tulips that bloomed April 9. Halloran planted the bulbs at the beginning of fall.

The University of Missouri St. Louis County Extension will host two gardening workshops over fall plantings and cover crops this month.

The fall plantings workshop will be held Wednesday, July 24 at the MU Extension office at 132 E. Monroe Ave., 63122, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Extension horticulturalist Justin Keay will present the timeline for stating fall vegetable plants and direct seeding of fall root crops. The cost to participate is $10 and those interested can register at www.extension.missouri.edu/stlouis/classes.aspx. Participants will get to take home some vegetable seeds.

The cover crop workshop will be held Wednesday, July 31, at the extension office from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Keay will discuss the benefits of using cover crops in a home garden. Learn simple ways to insert cover crops into garden spaces and naturally add nitrogen.

The cost to participate is $10 and those interested can register at www.extension.missouri.edu/stlouis/classes.aspx. There will be a few giveaways to help participants get started with cover crops.
