Mehlville Senior High boys stumble in heartbreaking losses to Pacific, Parkway South

After winning six straight since Christmas, the Mehlville Senior High School boys’ basketball team last week dropped heartbreaking back-to-back losses at Pacific and Parkway South.

“It was a tough week,” Mehlville head coach Andy Guethle said. “We’ve been playing pretty well all in all.”

Against Pacific Jan. 21, the Panthers (10-5, 2-0 Suburban West) found themselves down 23-11 at halftime before going on a 14-4 run in the third quarter to cut the Indians’ lead to 27-25. But Mehlville was matched nearly point for point in the fourth quarter for a 44-41 loss.

“We only scored two points in the second quarter and we let that game slip out of our hands,” Guethle said. “Pacific’s got a good team, but we probably had four or five traveling calls in transition and turned the ball over carelessly. We ran our offense, but didn’t run it the way we needed to be successful.”

Aaron Alexander led the Panthers with 15 points and six rebounds while racking up two assists. The senior forward is averaging 13.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

“Aaron’s been playing really well,” Guethle said. “Our guards have been doing a really good job this season at getting the ball inside to him.”

Mehlville’s Matt Browning also scored in double figures with 10 points and four rebounds. The senior guard also racked up five assists against the Indians.

Mehlville’s woes continued Friday night at Parkway South as the Patriots jumped out to a 16-7 lead after the first quarter.

The Panthers failed to cut into the Patriots’ lead as Parkway South held a 34-24 advantage at halftime.

The Panthers pounced the Patriots in the third quarter as they went on a 21-8 run to take a 45-42 lead. But Parkway South bounced back in the fourth quarter for the 62-58 victory.

“We were down 12 at one point in the first half and got it down to 10 at the half,” Guethle said. “We came out in the third quarter and cut down their lead pretty quickly. I think that the game was a pretty good measuring stick for us.”

Alexander led the Panthers with 14 points and eight rebounds while Kendrick Sharp also scored in double figures with 12 points and three rebounds. Sharp recorded one steal and is averaging 9.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.

“Kendrick’s a guy that goes as hard as he can possibly go every time he’s out on the floor,” Guethle said. “He’s essentially always there for us and is also a really good defender.”

The Panthers are back in action at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they play host to Suburban West Conference rival Marquette.

Marquette (2-15, 0-3 Suburban West) is coming off a 54-43 loss at Kirkwood Friday night as Garrett Sneed led the Mustangs with 16 points and six rebounds.
