It’s going to be tough to beat the Lindbergh High School boys’ tennis team over the next couple of years.

The Flyers thumped the competition at the recent District 1 championships at Cape Girardeau High School with 33.5 points. The second-place finisher, Webster Groves, was 15.5 points behind Lindbergh with 18 points.

“It was a great season,” Lindbergh head coach Colby Schmid told the Call. “We only lost to Clayton, Marquette and Kirkwood during the regular season.”

Lindbergh advanced to the sectional championship where the Flyers dropped a 5-1 decision to DeSmet. Despite the loss to DeSmet, Lindbergh did have three representatives at the state championships in sophomores Kyle O’Leary, Kyle Tosie and Josh Nezam.

O’Leary competed in the singles tournament where he defeated Matt Gordon of Lafayette 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. O’Leary lost to Blake Strode of Pattonville in the quarterfinal 6-0, 6-2 and Dan Levy of Parkway North in the consolation quarterfinal 6-3, 7-6(5).

“Kyle (O’Leary) played extremely well,” Schmid said. “One of his goals is to win state and I think that he has a chance to do that as long as he stays focused.”

In doubles competition, the Lindbergh duo of Tosie and Nezam lost to Matt Schlueter and Scott Schlueter of Helias in the first round of action 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

They bounced back in the first round of consolation play with a win over Peter Hantack and Brandon Polk of Fort Zumwalt South 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Tosie and Nezam were exited from the tournament with a heartbreaking 7-6(1), 6-1 loss to Matt Dresner and Justin Winner of Rock Bridge.

“I knew that they would do well at districts and they did,” Schmid said. “I thought that they may be able to make some noise at state.”

With the Flyers’ foundation of three sophomores for next season, Schmid is confident that his team can not only duplicate this past season’s accomplishments, but surpass that success in 2005.

“We’ve got these guys for two more years and Lindbergh’s going to be good for years to come,” Schmid said. “Some of the guys are playing in the offseason and we are extremely optimistic for next year and years to come.”
