For years, Lindbergh High School alum Will Scherer has lived and breathed Greco-Roman wrestling, spending most of his high school career taking classes virtually due to his high-intensity training and constant travel. This dedication recently paid off at the 2026 U20 Greco-Roman U.S. Open, held April 22-26 at The Expo at World Market Center Las Vegas, when Scherer finished second in his weight class, securing him a spot on the United States Men’s U20 National Team.
At the event, Scherer competed in a total of six matches, winning four to make the finals. He lost twice in a best-of-three final, earning him second place.
“I appreciated the opportunity to compete and prove to myself that I am doing the right things with the right people. After the event, I just felt truly grateful for the opportunities God has given me from growing up in Lindbergh, having family who support me and being able to work at what I love doing,” Scherer said.
Scherer became interested in the sport at age 13 when he met world-class Greco-Roman wrestling coach Lucas Steldt, who remains his personal coach today. For those unfamiliar, Greco-Roman wrestling is a form of the sport that differs from typical freestyle wrestling as Greco-Roman prohibits holds, trips and grabs below the waist.
Due to his performance in Las Vegas, Scherer will now represent Team USA for the first time at the Pan-American Championships in Rio de Janeiro this July. He will be competing at 77 kilograms against the top U20 wrestlers in the world.
“The thing I am most looking forward to about representing Team USA for the first time is having my personal coach, Lucas Steldt, there as he is the main coach for this Pan-American Championship. It’s gonna be a great experience to share with him. I’m training to run around the mat waving our flag in victory and to bring home a gold medal,” Scherer said.
