The Lindbergh High School girls’ basketball team recently experienced a rough week as the Flyers suffered back-to-back losses.

Last week’s back-to-back losses for the 4-2 Flyers came at the hands of Hazelwood West and Oakville.

The losses snapped a four-game winning streak that the Flyers had enjoyed since opening the 2003-2004 season.

Against Hazelwood West on Tuesday of last week, the Flyers fell behind 11-7 after the first quarter, but evened the score at 20 points each by halftime. Lindbergh pulled ahead 39-34 after the third quarter, but failed to score in the fourth quarter en route to a 49-46 loss.

“We didn’t hit a field goal in the fourth quarter against Hazelwood West,” head coach Bill Thoele told the Call. “We had good looks, but didn’t put it in the hole, which happens sometimes.”

Lindbergh’s Amy Hake led the Flyers with 15 points despite suffering the flu. Of her 15 points scored, nine were from three-point range. The junior guard also recorded seven rebounds, one steal and one assist in the loss.

“Amy was sick and is still getting over the flu,” Thoele said. “It was a pretty physical game but she went out there and did the job for us.”

Also scoring in double figures for the Flyers was junior forward Paula Smith, who garnered 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

“Paula’s giving us 10 points and 10 rebounds a game,” Thoele said. “You really can’t ask anymore than that.”

The Flyers were grounded again last Friday night as they suffered a 58-54 loss to Oakville.

“We had leads in both games but just couldn’t hold them,” Thoele said. “The loss to Oakville was a frustrating one. I expected it to be a tough game, but we didn’t play well in the last three quarters.”

Hake led all scorers with 26 points while recording four assists, two rebounds and two steals. Smith also scored in double figures with 10 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Flyers return to action this Friday evening as they take on Festus in the first round of the Seckman Tournament.

Lindbergh thumped Festus 55-25 last season during a game in which Hake led all scorers with 18 points.

Lindbergh has a bit more motivation this year due to the fact that Festus is one of two teams that didn’t rank the Flyers as the top seed of the tournament. Such motivation is just what the Flyers are looking for this season.

“I really don’t know much about them this year,” Thoele said. “We need to just come out with a lot of intensity and take it to them.”

The Festus game is scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. start.
