When opponents play the Lindbergh High School girls’ basketball team, they should know one thing before starting the game: Defend Amy Hake as best as you possibly can.

The senior guard was nearly unstoppable on Tuesday of last week as she racked up 29 points in the Flyers’ 58-39 drumming of Northwest House Springs. But Lindbergh head coach Bill Thoele is quick to note that Hake is not the only offensive threat on the 1-0 Flyers’ roster.

“I definitely think that people are going to key in on Amy eventually,” he said. “But we’ve got plenty of people to score, which in the long run will make us a much better team.”

Such was the case as junior forward Paula Smith scored 12 points and led all rebounders with 12 boards. Smith also was a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe and racked up two blocked shots, one steal and one assist.

“Paula actually had an off night in terms of shooting,” he said. “But she really stepped it up and had 12 rebounds.”

Hake was not only a solid contributor on offense, but also was an integral part of the Flyer defense with six steals and five rebounds.

“Amy’s offense really starts with her defense,” Thoele said. “I’ll take 29 points from her for any game.”

Lindbergh returns to action at 7 p.m. today — Dec. 11 — as the Flyers play host to Fort Zumwalt West.

“They’re young, but play really aggressive man-to-man,” Thoele said of Zumwalt West. “They like to penetrate and take the ball to the hole. We’ve just got to do the things we can do and not really worry about the opponent.”
