It’s always good to score a lot of runs in baseball.

But the Lindbergh Flyers were not expecting to have to score runs in double-digit numbers to win on the road at Springfield Hillcrest this past Saturday afternoon.

“It was a pretty good ballgame,” Flyers head coach Darin Scott told the Call. “It was one of those games where you knew that you had to keep scoring.”

Scoring a lot of runs was exactly what Lindbergh did as the team came away with an 11-8 win over Hillcrest.

Lindbergh starting pitcher David Ounanian threw 41/3 innings, in which he gave up six runs on five hits. Ounanian also walked four batters and retired one via strikeout in his second win of the season.

“Dave didn’t have his best stuff, but he battled and kept us in the ballgame,” Scott said. “Luckily we were able to have a good day at the plate.”

The Flyers’ Charlie Schinsky was one of several players who had a strong day at the plate as he went 3-4 with two runs batted in and one stolen base. Schinsky has struggled at the plate this season and the Flyers’ head coach was glad to see the senior shortstop have a little success with the bat.

“It was nice to see Charlie find the hole that day,” Scott said.

“He really set the table for Brock (Bond) and (Andrew) Spitzfaden.”

Both the Flyers and Hillcrest scored two runs each after the first inning of play, with Lindbergh taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the second. Yet it was senior designated hitter Adam Laury’s two-run homer in the top of the third inning that gave Lindbergh a 6-4 lead after the end of three innings.

“Adam’s home run came at a pretty big time during the game in the third inning,” Scott said. “It kind of set the tone where if they (Hillcrest) got ahead, we were going to come back the next inning and score again.”

The Flyers knocked out one run in the fourth and three runs in the sixth along with one in the seventh for the win.

“I thought that the kids did a really nice job staying disciplined at the plate,” Scott stated.

Lindbergh is back in action today — April 8 — and Friday, April 9, as the Flyers play in the Midwest Classic Invitational at St. Charles West Senior High.

The Flyers will play host to St. Charles West on Thursday and Grandview of Kansas City on Friday.

“We’re really looking forward to this week because it’s going to show us where we are at in comparison to other teams,” Scott said. “It will be a good measuring stick in that it will test our pitching staff which will be really beneficial for us in the long run.”

The Flyers’ game against St. Charles West will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday and at 3 p.m. Friday against Grandview.
