Flyers baseball team off to 3-3 start

Just six games into the 2008 season, the Lindbergh High School baseball team has seen its share of highs and lows with a bit of inconsistency in the middle.

“We can probably attribute some of our inconsistency to inexperience,” Lindbergh head coach Darin Scott told the Call. “We actually played six games last week and our best game of the week was a 5-3 win over St. Charles West on Friday.”

On Saturday, the Flyers (3-3) had a double header against Raymore Peculiar and Belton.

In the morning game against Raymore Peculiar, the Flyers posted an 8-2 win as Lindbergh starting pitcher Scott Krysl gave up just one run on one hit in six innings.

The junior starting pitcher also walked three batters and struck out six for his first win of the 2008 campaign.

“Scott threw the ball extremely well,” the Lindbergh coach said. “He did a real nice job working the ball on the inside. He had them (Raymore Peculiar) tied up for most of the game.”

Lindbergh third baseman Nick Hoag was the hottest hitter at the plate with a two-hit performance that included two runs batted in and one run scored. The senior infielder also recorded two stolen bases in the win over Raymore Peculiar.

“When we came out in the first inning, Nick came up with a pretty big two-out single,” Scott said. “He really came through when we needed him to.”

In the second game of the day against Belton, Lindbergh dropped a disappointing 7-6 decision to the Pirates.

“We were up 3-0, gave up the lead, then came back and gave up three runs in the top of the sixth,” Scott said. “We ended up stranding five runners in the sixth and seventh innings.”

Lindbergh starting pitcher Andy Flett gave up three runs on two hits in 21⁄3 innings. Flett walked two and struck out five in the no-decision effort.

“We did see a lot of positive things out of Andy in that game,” Scott said. “He made a couple of mistakes, but that’s going to happen on your first time out there.”

Lindbergh’s Cody Higgs recorded two hits and one walk in the loss to Belton. The junior shortstop also stole two bases.

“Cody didn’t have the RBIs, but he set the table for Garth Sherman in the fourth inning,” Scott said.
