Crestwood freshmen boast 12-4 record

Although the Crestwood American Legion varsity squad may get all the attention from the media, it’s the freshman team that’s made the most noise this season.

At 12-4 overall with a mark of 11-3 in District 10 play, the Post 777 freshman are expected to be one of the contenders for the District 10 tournament championship this week.

“The season has gone really well,” Crestwood head coach Doug Massie told the Call. “We have a good group of kids that have really meshed from the beginning. I’m really proud of these kids.”

One of the interesting notes about this year’s squad is the fact that it carries three incoming freshmen in a league where most players are entering their sophomore year of high school.

Shortstop Andrew Allen, pitcher/outfielder Steven Egart and third baseman/pitcher Stephen Massie recently finished middle school and are all key contributors to the success of this year’s team.

“Those three boys are baseball smart,” Massie said. “They know where they need to be and throw the ball to the right places.”

First baseman/pitcher Robby Meeh, pitcher/designated hitter John Meyer, catcher/center fielder Dan Kraft and catcher Tom Henke, along with Derek Davis, John Gauthier, Matt Gregston, Frank Harris, Chris Harden, Rick Hess and Adam Kamiski also are valuable components to Post 777’s freshman squad.

“All of these kids have pulled together as one unit,” Massie said. “That’s what I think is very cool.”

The District 10 tournament is slated to be played this week with times and locations being determined after the Call went to press.
