Asks why Furrer’s supporters believe he’s exempt from censure

To the editor:

I have been reading the stories about Sunset Hills Mayor Mark Furrer and his supporters.

They maintain that unless he is convicted, he has done nothing wrong. That is not true and that is not how it works.

As mayor, he represents the city of Sunset Hills and is a public figure. His behavior, on and off duty, should do nothing to discredit or embarrass the city he represents.

We teach our children this in school. This is basic stuff. It’s called instilling values. If you are a member of a sports team, the marching band, et cetera, your behavior at school events, as well as in general, has to be above reproach. If you get in trouble with the law, you are subject to suspension and discipline.

This is a dynamic that occurs daily in the media. Some athlete loses sponsors or gets kicked off a team for unseemly public behavior. Employers suspend or fire people for posting inappropriate comments on social media. The list is endless.

Why is it that Mark Furrer and his supporters think that he is exempt from this sort of censure?

Mark Furrer appears to have some issues with self-control and anger management. I agree that he is entitled to his day in court.

However, Sunset Hills is entitled, as a community, to discipline Mark Furrer for behaving in a way that discredited and brought shame and notoriety to that community.
