To the editor:
Oakville has more than a dozen active churches that all follow the teachings of Jesus. Where are they? Why are they silent in the midst of the abuse of our neighbors based on their country of origin or skin color? Would Jesus remain silent or loudly condemn the actions of those who abuse the marginalized?
I ask this question of local churches because they are in a unique position to lead our community. Week after week, the people of Oakville come to them. Perhaps they have already denounced the violence and racism inflicted on our neighbors, but if not, will they? Will they emphatically and consistently challenge their congregations to truly “love your neighbor”?
Church leaders, will you condemn the hateful actions and rhetoric publicly? I challenge you to leave the comfort of the sanctuary and make it known to the entire community that your sermons are not just full of words, but actions.
