When the Oakville and Lindbergh high school football teams met Friday evening, more than just bragging rights were up for grabs.

The game featured two teams that not only were undefeated, but also were looking to climb the Suburban West Confer-ence standings as Lindbergh handed Oak-ville a 25-6 setback.

Lindbergh head coach Tom Beauchamp explained that his team came into this season’s game with much more experience, which was evident in the Flyers win over the Tigers.

“Last year we were so young,” Beau-champ told the Call. “Now we’ve got kids that have been around the block a bit.”

The Flyers (2-0, 1-0 Suburban West) held Oakville scoreless for the first three quarters of play, which led to the Tigers (1-1, 0-1 Suburban West) first loss of the season.

“I think we had a lot less execution on offense and more mental breakdowns on defense,” Oakville head coach Arlee Con-ners told the Call.

Lindbergh took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter as Drew Yanker scored on a seven-yard run with 4:05 left in the quarter. The senior running back went on to carry the ball 12 times for 46 yards.

“Drew’s a very quick kid that plays hard,” Beauchamp said. “The linemen got off the ball well and he made a very impressive run.”

Kicker Jason LaRussa converted the point-after attempt, which was the start to a solid evening for the junior that included two field goals of 35 and 27 yards in the second quarter.

“Jason’s done an outstanding job,” Beau-champ said. “He plays on the soccer team and it’s a situation that’s worked really well. I think it brings the soccer and football teams together and brings a little unity with the school.”

Both teams went scoreless throughout the third quarter until Lindbergh quarterback Joe Haas scored on a one-yard run with 11:01 left to play in the fourth quarter. The senior finished the evening with a 5-16 performance for 78 yards. He also carried the ball 14 times for 66 yards and one touchdown.

“Joe had a good game,” Beauchamp said. “He threw the ball fairly well, but had a few dropped balls by the receivers.”

Oakville finally would get on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter as senior running back Brandon Dillard caught a 26-yard pass from Sam Kriegel with 3:10 left in the game.

Dillard finished the evening with 32 yards rushing and 26 yards receiving.

“Brandon’s a versatile player for us,” Con-ners said. “We look to get him touches in many different ways.”

Kriegel was 7-16 for 132 yards and one touchdown.

The senior quarterback did throw three interceptions, which were not a true indicator of his performance on the field, according to the Oakville head coach.

“Sam did a pretty decent job considering what was going on,” Conners explained. “I don’t think the interceptions justified the performance that he had.”

The Flyers finished taming the Tigers late in the game as junior linebacker Tyler Kiel scored on a 60-yard fumble recovery.

“That was amazing,” Beauchamp said in regards to Kiel’s fumble recovery. “He had about 150 yards by just zigzagging across the field. It was pretty exciting to watch.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Lind-bergh senior defensive lineman Jason Muehlheausler recorded four tackles, two assists, one fumble, one interception and 1.5 sacks.

“Jason had a good night,” Beauchamp said. “He’s been starting since he was a sophomore and in my mind, he’s a Division I type of player.”

The Flyers are back in action Friday when they travel to Mehlville for a Subur-ban West Conference meeting with the Panthers.

Mehlville is 0-2 after suffering a 35-25 loss to CBC last week.

“Mehlville is always tough and I think that it’s going to be one heck of a barnburner,” Beauchamp said. “Hopefully we’ll come in and give them a good game.”

The Tigers also are back in action Friday when they travel to Lafayette for a conference meeting with the Lancers. Lafayette also is 0-2 this season, but the Tigers head coach knows that the Lancers are much better than their record indicates.

“They’re not really an 0-2 type team,” Conners said. “They have a good passing attack with a good quarterback and a good running back.”

Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. start.
