Two lanes of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge will reopen for Friday morning rush hour after the Missouri Department of Transportation received the results of days of inspection Thursday.

The westbound JB Bridge from Illinois to Missouri has been completely shut down since Sunday after a routine inspection found a massive 6-foot crack under the bridge.

Two lanes of the four-lane bridge will reopen by 5 a.m. Friday and will stay open through 10 a.m., MoDOT said. One lane of traffic will be kept open at all other times while repair work happens under the bridge.

The repairs can continue while the bridge carries traffic, but the repairs will be dependent on weather and rainy conditions.

No timeline was given for the repairs.

The state agency will limit the weight of vehicles that can cross the bridge, but it said the bridge will be safe to travel across when the lanes are open.

Personnel and equipment from MoDOT, the Illinois Department of Transportation and two companies will continue to work on the bridge to make the repairs. A specialist was flown in from Seattle for inspection.

The bridge was built in 1985.
