A funeral Mass for Steven Carl Berry, 92, will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 5414 Alaska Ave.
Mr. Berry died Dec. 17. He was born July 26, 1922, in East St. Louis, Ill., the first of five children of Steven J. and Stella N. (nee Tarman) Berry. Mr. Berry resided in St. Louis since early childhood and was a graduate of McKinley High School.
He most recently retired from Operation Safe Street in St. Louis, and also worked for the Falstaff Brewery in St. Louis and the Carling Brewery in Belleville, Ill. In the early 1950s, Mr. Berry was employed by Vickers Electrical and was dispatched to Groton, Conn., to supervise the installation of degaussing equipment for the USS Nautilus, the first U.S. nuclear submarine.
He was an Army veteran, serving in Okinawa during World War II. Mr. Berry also was a decades-long member of the South Side Brothers Lodge and a former Scoutmaster at St. Cecilia Church.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 72 years, Virginia A Berry (nee Schwartz); and children Steven E. (JoAnn), Michael T. (Tabitha), Madonna L. (Rebecca Priest), Gregory J. Berry, Maureen Berry Konto-minas (Michael), Joseph S. Berry and Maria E. Grossius (George). He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel J.
Mr. Berry graciously gifted his remains to the Washington University Medical School. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, a donation for military veterans would be appreciated.
