St. Louis region under wind chill advisory, warning this weekend

The St. Louis region will again face bitter cold and freezing temps when another round of arctic air moves through the area Thursday night.

A wind chill advisory and wind chill warning have been issued by the National Weather Service in St. Louis for northeastern and central Missouri, and west-central Illinois. This includes St. Louis city, and St. Louis, Jefferson, St. Charles, Franklin, Washington, Crawford, St. Genevieve, St. Francois, Iron, Madison and Reynolds counties in Missouri, while in Illinois it includes Greene, Macoupin, Montgomery, Bond, Fayette, Clinton, Marion, Washington, Randolph, Calhoun, Jersey, Madison, St. Clair and Monroe counties.

The wind chill advisory will be in effect starting at midnight and last through 6 p.m. Friday. From 6 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday, a wind chill warning will be in effect.

For the wind chill advisory, wind chills as low as 20 below zero are expected late tonight through Friday. Wind chills as low as 30 below are expected Friday night through Saturday morning, prompting the warning.

Those without appropriate shelter, or those venturing outdoors without proper clothing, will be highly susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. The predicted wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

There is a possibility for a light accumulation of snow Thursday night, with the highest changes of accumulating snow north of Interstate 70. Accumulations are expected to range from a trace amount to 2 inches north of I-70.

The National Weather Service urges travelers to use caution  when traveling outside, and to wear appropriate clothing, with a hat and gloves.

Temperatures are expected to warm-up again on Sunday, with above normal temperatures predicted next week.
