Softball Flyers pound Seckman in ’05 opener

By STEPHEN GLOVER

For the Call

Without a doubt, the Lindbergh High School girls’ softball team started off the 2005 season with a bang, pounding Seck-man 10-0 last week.

The Flyers (1-0) took advantage of Seckman’s six errors as they scored seven runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth in the Aug. 24 game at Lindbergh.

“We capitalized on some of their mistakes,” Lindbergh head coach Darin Scott told the Call. “It’s always good to start the season with a win. The girls came out ready to go.”

Lindbergh starting pitcher Lilly Mc-Donagh held the Jaguars to just two hits as she threw a five-inning complete game for her first win of the 2005 season. The senior hurler walked just one batter and re-tired eight via strikeout, which complemented her 3-4 performance at the plate in which she drove in two runs.

“Lilly’s been patiently waiting to be our No. 1 starter,” Scott said. “She’s now our No. 1 pitcher and is ready to go. She had a really nice game.”

Junior first baseman Linzi Bereitschaft and junior second baseman Kelsey Heuvel-man drove in one run each for the Flyers as Bereitschaft went 1-2 with two walks and one run scored.

Heuvelman was 1-3 at the plate with one stolen base and one run scored.

Up next for Lindbergh is the Suburban South/West Tournament this week at the Affton Athletic Association. The Flyers were slated to take on Affton Tuesday — after the Call went to press — in the first round of the tournament.

“I think that they’re going to be fairly young,” Scott said.

“They played us tough last year and I’m sure that they’ll play us tough again this year,” he added.
