If the Mehlville Senior High School girls’ soccer team had a theme song relating to its current season, the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” might be a good fit.

“We’re feeling pretty good right now,” Panthers head coach Scott Jackson told the Call. “I feel a little more confident going into the final stretch run of the conference schedule.”

The Panthers (5-2, 1-1 Suburban West Conference) handed South county rival Lindbergh a 2-1 defeat in overtime April 13.

The win over the Flyers affirmed what Jackson has been preaching to his troops since the first day of the 2004 season.

“It was a big win with them (Lindbergh) being in the conference and the district,” Scott explained.

“It was the final nail in the coffin in the girl’s believing in what I’ve told them.”

Mehlville midfielder Christy Capkovic put the Panthers on the scoreboard with a 1-0 lead.

The freshman phenomenon currently has eight goals and three assists this season, which would please any coach.

“She’s on fire,” Jackson said. “A lot of her success is coming from Allison Schaughnessey and Karen Hines.”

The Panthers put Lindbergh away in the first minute of overtime as Hines hammered in the game-winning goal.

The Mehlville senior midfielder has four goals this season, with three of them being game-winning goals.

“She’s causing a lot of havoc up top,” Scott said.

“Karen’s got unbelievable stamina and speed. She continuously puts pressure on the defense and does the little things that she’s suppose to do.”

After their big win over Lindbergh, the Panthers got a cold dose of reality April 15, with a 4-0 thumping by Marquette.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead during the first 15 minutes of play and tacked on their fourth goal of the game at the 28th minute of action.

“They (Marquette) came out and took it to us right from the beginning,” Jackson said.

“We got off to a slow start and our goal in the second half was to shut them down, which we did. We showed a whole different side of us in the second half.”

This Thursday evening the Panthers play host to Parkway West in a game that could determine their fate in the race for a conference championship.

“They’re solid,” Jackson said, referring to the Longhorns. “I watched them play in the Bi-State Shootout and they’ve got too many good players to double team them.

“If we can tie or beat a team like Parkway West, I think that we’ll be in the running for a conference championship until the end of the season,” the Mehlville coach added.

Mehlville’s game against Parkway West is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
