Panthers defeat Flyers 3-1 in soccer matchup

When the Lindbergh and Mehlville high school boys’ soccer teams played Saturday afternoon, it was a matchup between two of the top teams in the Suburban West Conference.

The Panthers (10-2-1, 2-1 Suburban West) posted a 3-1 win over the Flyers, helping solidify their bid for a conference championship. Mehlville is riding a six-game unbeaten streak that extends back to a 4-2 win over St. Mary’s on Sept. 18.

The loss for Lindbergh (6-6-1, 3-1 Su-burban West) dropped the Flyers from the top spot in the conference standings, but head coach Scott Luczak was pleased with his team’s performance against the Panthers.

“Mehlville put pressure on us right away, but our guys didn’t quit and we put one in to make it 2-1,” Luczak told the Call. “I think that this team is playing better as a whole right now.”

Lindbergh’s lone goal of the game came near the end of the first half when sophomore forward David Schicker scored his second goal of the season.

“David’s been a spark plug for us,” Luczak said. “He’s been giving us some energy whether it’s off the bench or a start. We’re seeing more guys stepping up and trying to play complete games.”

Mehlville’s game-winning goal came from senior midfielder Fabio Manzella with junior midfielder Sergio Maciel and senior forward Almin Sabotic also contributing goals to the win over the Flyers.

The Flyers are back in action Tuesday when they play host to Oakville in a game that has not only conference implications, but also could determine either team’s fate in the upcoming district tournament.

“Oakville’s got some talented players and a strong defense,” Luczak said. “But our guys are starting to get some confidence and we’re taking things one game at a time.”

Mehlville is scheduled to play host to CBC this Friday in non-conference action.

The Flyers’ game against Oakville is slated for a 6 p.m. start while Mehlville’s match against CBC is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
