Oakville High School Principal Tamara Sunkett announced her retirement effective at the end of the first semester Jan. 17.

Sunkett was named principal of OHS prior to the start of the 2019-2020 school year. She previously was assistant superitendent of Riverview Gardens School District.

In an email to parents Jan. 13, Sunkett said that the decision to retire came after careful consideration with her family.

“For more than a year, I have been dealing with a health matter. As many of you also are aware, my two daughters, whose families live in Texas, welcomed my two very first grandchildren in … 2021. So, after very careful … difficult conversation … I have decided to conclude what has been a wonderful three decades in education,” Sunkett said in an email.

Brian Brennan was named interim principal of OHS effective Jan. 18. Brennan has been assistant principal at OHS for the past 13 years.

“Principal Sunkett has led with grace and compassion through some incredibly difficult school years. We are grateful for her leadership and service to the Oakville High School,” said assistant Superintendent Jeff Bressler in a Jan. 13 email to parents.
