As quiet and incognito as a stealth bomber, the boys’ swimming and diving team at Oakville Senior High has racked up a perfect 6-0 record in dual-meet ac-tion this season.
“I’m really pleased with how we’ve done so far this year,” head coach Dan Schoen-feldt said. “But our biggest test is in Jan-uary when we swim Lindbergh, Park-way South and Lafayette.”
The Tigers finished the first half of the season with an impressive 93-92 win over Suburban West Conference rival Mar-quette. The Mustangs are among Mis-souri’s elite, placing in the top 10 at the state championships in three of the past four seasons.
“It was a good win for us,” Schoenfeldt said. “The meet came down to the last relay and we had to get at least third in order to win. We ended up getting second and third so this was some good mo-mentum for us going into the break.”
Oakville’s Greg Marx won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events for the Tigers and is qualified for the state championships in the 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyles along with three relays. The senior co-captain hasn’t lost a race in the 100-yard freestyle this season.
Senior co-captain Kyle Tracy won the 100-yard butterfly against Marquette and is another potential Tiger to qualify for the state championships this season.
Joe Ewing won the 100-yard backstroke for Oakville. The sophomore has qualified for state in the 50-yard free-style along with the 100-yard backstroke. Ewing’s also just one tenth of a second away from qualifying for the 100-yard freestyle.
Freshmen Tom Diekemper and Nick Stoppelman also have made significant contributions to this year’s team with Diekemper winning the 100-yard breaststroke against Marquette and Stoppel-man coming out on top in the one-meter springboard competition.
Diekemper has qualified for the state championships in the 100-yard breaststroke along with the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Stoppelman is expected to qualify for state in the one-meter springboard event this season.
The Tigers are back in action today —Dec. 30 — and Friday in the Rockwood Summit Invitational.
The preliminaries are at 4 p.m. today while the diving events are at 4 p.m. Friday. The championship finals of the invitational are at 6 p.m. Friday.
