Oakville Senior High School junior Alishia Anderson will join more than 750 young women at the 64th session of the American Legion Auxiliary’s Missouri Girls’ State that will take place from June 19 to June 25 at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.

The leadership and government program is designed to educate tomorrow’s leaders in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. It is non-partisan and non-political.

Anderson was chosen to attend the event by the 11/12 District American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 1.

The girls begin their weeklong adventure by registering to vote on Sunday after orientation. They receive an assignment to a mythical political party that has no political organization or party beliefs or platform. These are all established by the delegates within three days into the session, the release stated.

Delegates may file for elected offices at the city, county and state level. She then conducts her political campaign complete with speeches and campaign materials.

Once elected to office, delegates are sworn in and perform the duties as described for that position in the official Girls State Manual. Non-elected delegates are given appointments as well as encouraged to visit the offices of these elected to communicate their needs as citizens.

Anderson is the daughter of Angela Anderson.
