Oakville High choirs hit a high note

Choirs from Oakville Senior High School won numerous awards at the recent Heritage International Choral Festival at Riverside Cathedral in New York City, according to a Mehlville School District news release.

The Women’s Chamber Choir received a Gold Award in the 3A Division for Women’s Choirs and the Show Choir won a Gold Award in the Show Choir Division at the Festival.

The Concert Choir Treble received a Silver Award in the 2A Division for Women’s Choirs, The Concert Choir Mixed won a Gold Award in the Division for Mixed Choirs and the Madrigal Singers won a Gold Award in the Division for Chamber Choirs.

The three choirs also earned overall first-place finishes in their respective divisions.

In addition, the Madrigal Singers received the Outstanding Choral Performance Award.

Earning Adjudicators’ Awards for receiving average scores of 95 percent, 96 percent and 97 percent, respectively were the Show Choir, the Concert Choir Mixed and the Madrigal Singers. Also, the Concert Choir Mixed, the Women’s Chamber Choir and the Madrigal Singers received invitations to the Heritage Festival of Gold competition next year.

The Oakville High School choral program capped off its appearance at the Heritage International Choral Festival by winning the Festival Sweepstakes Award.

Paula Martin serves as director of choirs at Oakville High School with Kimberly Jeffs serving as assistant choir director.
