It looked as though the top teams on the St. Louis side of Class 6 for most of the 2003 season were Lindbergh and Mehlville.

And despite neither getting a chance to show its stuff at the Show-Me-Bowl, the teams were well represented when the 2003 All-Suburban West teams were announced.

Some big honors were awarded to a lot of local players and coaches alike, as Lindbergh’s Tom Beauchamp, Mehlville’s Gary Heyde and Kirkwood’s Mike Wade were recognized as cocoaches of the year. The offensive player of the year was Lindbergh quarterback Brock Bond, while Flyers linebacker Dan Gabris was named the Suburban West defensive player of the year.

Beauchamp, who had the luxury of coaching both “players of the year,” had nothing but good things to say about them.

“Brock is the kind of guy that makes things happen, and has the ability to get better as the competition gets better,” he said. “That’s what the great ones like Brock and Dan are all about.”

On the offensive side of the ball, Bond was named first team all-conference at quarterback while Mehlville’s Ronald Roberts earned second-team honors.

Rickey Giles (Mehlville) and Charlie Schinsky (Lindbergh) were second and third-team running backs, while Mehlville’s Darrell Trice was named as a first-team wide receiver.

For Lindbergh, Chris Geisz (second team) and Andrew Spitzfaden (third team) were also on the all-conference team at wideout. Ryan Kirschner was named to the all-conference list as a third team tight end.

On the offensive line, there also were plenty of difference makers for both schools where Beamer Eisele (Lindbergh) and Tim Suntrup (Mehlville) were given the nod as first-team tackles, while Nick McArthur (Lindbergh, offensive guard) also was on the first team.

Mckenzie Penny of Mehlville was rewarded for his work at offensive guard where he earned second-team honors and teammate Greg Tochtrup was named to the second-team as at center.

Lindbergh’s Spitzfaden, aside from his work as a wide receiver, was second-team all conference at kicker, while Mehlville’s Dan Hall was named third-team all conference punter.

The Flyers’ Geisz was recognized for his work on the defensive side of the ball and along with Mehlville’s Tim Craig was named second-team all Suburban West at defensive end.

The Mehlville defensive line was further recognized for its excellent work with Sean Scott being named as a first-team defensive tackle and teammate Chris Bax earning third-team honors.

Lindbergh’s defensive tackles — not to be outdone — also were recognized with teammates Nick Cody (first team) and Darius Washington (second team) being named all Suburban-West.

Lindbergh’s Gabris, to go with his player of the year honors, was named as a first-team linebacker as was Mehlville’s Gary Williams.

Gabris’ coach was appreciative of his play.

“Dan always did a good job both keeping things loose in practice and keeping people fired up at the same time,” the Lindbergh coach told the Call. “Like Brock, he really makes things happen when he is on the field.”

Spitzfaden, a player who was seemingly everywhere on the field for Lindbergh, was indeed everywhere when it came to all-conference as he was named to the defensive team as well as a third-team linebacker. Teammate Nick Jenkersen also was listed as a third-team linebacker.

At defensive back, the Panthers’ Trice was named first-team all Suburban West while Lindbergh’s Chris Luebbert (second team) and Ron Fink (third team) also were recognized.
