McCluer North hands Flyers a heartbreaking 30-29 loss

Lindbergh to face Oakville Friday night

In front of a packed house of dedicated fans in the first home game of the 2013 season, the Lindbergh High School varsity football team suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss to McCluer North Friday night.

In the 30-29 loss, the Flyers were leading 29-28 late in the game until they gave up a safety with just more than five minutes left to play. They couldn’t get anything back after that.

“It was a well-fought ball game on both sides and I think that both teams are deserving of being able to hold there head up,” Lindbergh head coach Tom Beauchamp told the Call.

The Flyers, who traditionally run a very tight defense, gave up only seven points in the season opener, but Beauchamp said losing a high-scoring game isn’t reason to be alarmed.

“I think it’s not (reason to be concerned). We’ve got people in the right positions and we are doing the right things,” he said. “The other stuff came off special teams, so I mean you only give up two touchdowns as far as defensively. You can’t be to upset with yourself.

“Although there are times I’d like to get off the field with three and out and we had chances to do that, but I’ll tell you they’re quick. They had quick (running) backs and the quarterback is very elusive … They had good receivers. It was a heck of a ball game.”

With 1-1 record and two quality games under their belt, the Flyers should have no problem moving in the right direction.

“We wish we could have played better defensively, but when you look at the whole thing, they really only scored 12 points on the defense,” Beauchamp said. “They got one on a punt return. They got one on a pick and they got two safeties, so either way you look at it it’s one of those things … Offense did well the first half. The second half they didn’t get much going until the very end, but they are putting it together.

“But, you know, it’s a new offense, a new offensive coordinator. He’s working really hard. Some things will come around. Some things will happen. I have faith in that.”

Offensively, Garrett Krueger was a standout with a 90-yard kickoff return and 137 total receiving yards on the night.

“He did a lot of things right. He was all over it,” Beauchamp said of his four-year starter. “My overall assessment was it was pretty much a team effort other than Garrett was kind of shining out there a little

The Flyers will take on conference rival Oakville (1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday with another chance to please the home crowd.

Both teams will fight to the finish to avoid falling under .500 and Beauchamp said he knows it won’t be easy.

“Oakville, they’ve got talent. They had talent last year and (head coach) Arlee (Conners) always puts together a good program and gets the kids ready to play,” he said. “But I think we are going to be ready to go.

“I haven’t really looked at a lot of film yet, so I can’t get into specifics, but the little bit of film I have glanced at, they throw the ball around. They trek it around. They run pretty well. We’re just going to have to be ready to play solid defense and hopefully get our offense back on the rail and rolling.”
