Lindbergh soccer team finishes tough week with two losses, one tie

By STEPHEN GLOVER

For the Call

The Lindbergh High School boys’ soccer team was kicked around a bit last week.

The Flyers (2-2-1, 1-1 Suburban West) dropped a 2-0 de-cision to Vianney on Sept. 12 along with a 2-3 loss to Kirkwood the next day.

Lindbergh finished the week with a 3-3 tie with Hazelwood Central.

“Last week was frustrating,” Flyers head coach Dan Dor-sey told the Call. “We had four games on our schedule this week and knew it would be a tough stretch.”

Lindbergh senior midfielder Kyle O’Leary got the Flyers on the scoreboard with a goal in the first half.

“Kyle’s clearly one of our go-to players,” Dorsey said. “He’s really able to make things happen for us offensively. I think that he feels as if that it’s up to him to step up and produce goals.”

The Flyers extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal by senior midfielder Tim Laurentius.

“Tim’s coming into the season as a defender but he really showed some offensive punch in the preseason,” Dor-sey said.

“He’s been able to produce some goals for us,” he added.

Lindbergh’s third goal came late in the game as junior striker Tom Gardner tied the game in regulation play.

“Tom basically finished off one of our best offensive buildups of the year,” Dorsey said. “He put himself in a really good position to put a head on it.”

The Flyers are back in action this week as they participate in the CYC-Bob Guelker Memorial Tournament at the St. Louis Soccer Park.

The Flyers are scheduled to take on Francis Howell Central Wednesday, Sept. 21 — after the Call went to press.

“The whole pool is three teams that are very well coached,” Dorsey said. “They have a pretty large contingent of seniors on this year’s team. I think that this week will be a good preparation for that final stretch of the season.”

Lindbergh’s game with Francis Howell Central is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
